Runescape has just gotten prettier and easier

  • My experience of Runescape in 2006 was predominantly this: grind for hours, buy a few shiny new equipment, smash keyboard upon realising my battle level was not high enough to equip it, grind combat levels, equip RuneScape gold gear, get murdered in the Wilderness, shed shiny new gear, repeat. Every few months I would decide it was time to initiate a new accounts, inspired by some expert build I had seen or a inexplicable desire to live a simple life and become some kind of fabled hermit. Frankly, 12-year-old me believed that would be a fun thing to do.

    At first you could sulk and long for your puppy that once was, but soon enough you begin to notice the pet is stunning when compared with its haggard predecessor. It does all kinds of new tricks, it has character and charm, heaps of endgame content and doesn't need to be fed or walked as often.

    Where Runescape utilized to involve offering up one's hands to hours, or even days, of grinding for piecemeal progress, today it hands out level raises with a regularity that's difficult to stomach if you are able to remember sinking 20 hours of continuous play into acquiring only half of the XP you need to level up.

    Happy with my progress, I put an extra eight hours into boosting my abilities. At this point my general impression is that Runescape has just gotten prettier and easier, which wouldn't be enough to haul me back to its F2P clutches.

    What did manage that (I begrudgingly admit) was the number and caliber of quests to be completed in RuneScape. Quests are everywhere, and each is its own foray to a very small fragment of Runescape lore.

    Runescape's tone is joyously mild, and with fewer level cap hurdles to leap over you are free to embrace and explore it without submitting to the grind. Which is great, because Runescape's quests haven't really required one to use skills other than combat, and have generally incorporated puzzles or interactive components that have more in common with old school point-and-click adventure games than dream questing.

    Areas that used to be empty are brimming with NPCs buy runescape mobile gold, quests and tales. Every inch of the planet has been full of, or sometimes expanded, so as to incorporate all the characters, enemies and features that Jagex have been busy stuffing into the game for the last decade. The fact that Runescape is an online game is currently a bonus as opposed to its primary attraction. Jagex could take their match entirely offline and it would still be worth playing.
